Antique French Diamond and Enamel Bague De Firament Ring
Description: Truly spectacular French Georgian "Bague de Firmament" or "ring of heaven."
This very fine, navette-shape ring features a gorgeous silver-set, rose cut diamond frame surrounding a background of rich dark blue guilloche enamel. The enamel is set with three collet-set diamonds and displays a rose gold, hand-engraved pennant banner border, all under a curved rock crystal face. The ring has a 14k gold back and shank and is very comfortable to wear. This is an unusually rare and extremely collectable piece.
History: Celestial allusion jewelry was very au courant in the Georgian era. In the late 1700's, there was a profusion of royals gifting other royals these beautiful blue and diamond pieces. The dark blue enamel background, evokes the night sky, and the diamonds evoke the stars. This style was popularized by the lovely Marie Antoinette who frequently wore a Bague de Firmament ring and was one of the most followed trend setters of the day. Considered to be the height of romance and beauty in jewelry, these pieces were highly coveted and collected even back then.
The ring's shank has been carefully redone but the front and back of the ring are original. As with all pieces this old, care should be taken when wearing and one should avoid submerging the ring in water.
