Antique Victorian Berlin Iron Anchor Ring Description: A captivating Berlin Iron Victorian ring with an octagon face featuring a detailed depiction of a shining anchor surrounded by a garland of flowers. The ring shank is festooned with finely sculpted roses and daisies. Anchors traditionally represents hope and the flowers symbolize love and purity. This piece is in very good antique condition, the details are beautifully done and this is a rare and collectable ring. Berlin Iron jewelry was first fabricated in the early 1800's when the Prussian (Prussia is now Germany) royal family asked its citizens to help fund their country's share of the war effort against Napoleon by exchanging their gold and silver jewelry for iron. Production was later carried on through the Victorian era and the black finish of the iron (done by treating with linseed oil) worked both for mourning and to establish one's patriotism. Berlin Iron was again revived during WW1.
