Antique Aesthetic Movement Victorian Hand Engraved Locket Pendant

1900’s Aesthetic Movement was an art for arts sake movement that strove to profess that the arts should provide refined sensuous pleasure and celebrate beauty, rather than convey moral or sentimental messages. The movement rose in contrast to the heavily nostalgic and often dark Victorian period. Jewelry designs were often inspired by nature and frequently featured combinations of metals, enamel work and colored stones. The Aesthetic Movement was also heavily influenced by the trade agreement between Japan and the United States. Suddenly beautiful Eastern art flooded the market, influencing clothing, jewelry and furnishings. Prominent use of flowers, leaves and birds as well the Japanese arts were common themes.
Measurement: The pendant is 1 1/2" long, including the bale, and 7/8" wide.
Origin: American, c. 1875.
