Antique Victorian Niello, Rose Gold Overlay & Silver 17" Chain
Details: Antique Victorian niello, rose gold and silver chain - likely was originally a watch chain. This chain is lovely on its own, but would be an excellent match for an antique locket or pendant.
History: Niello is a black enamel-like mixture of copper, silver, and lead sulphide that is inlaid into etched or repoussé work and fired to hardness much like enamel. The result is then carefully buffed and shows a shimmery silvery gray-black hue that highlights the incised lines and is much more durable than traditional enamel. The Egyptians and the ancient Romans were the first to use a form of niello decoration and it has been used in design for thousands of years.
Measurements: 17" long. It features a swivel watch clasp and a spring ring ideal for hanging lockets or pendants.
