Antique Victorian Niello Silver Ivy Leaf Patterned Locket
Details: This lovely oval shaped working locket opens and can hold two pictures. Its all-over ivy leaf pattern represents eternity, fidelity, and strong affectionate attachment, such as wedded love and friendship. The reverse side has an oval space that is perfectly suited for engraving. The bale is also original with a vertical stripe pattern. Niello is an enamel-like process in which the silver is etched with a pattern and a zinc lead compound is inlaid into stylized etching, fired and polished. The result leaves a blue grey sheen in the grooves of the etching. Niello is considered very collectable.
Measurements: Just over 1 1/2" tall (including bale) and about 3/4" wide.
Origin: Vienna, c. 1860-1880. Maker's mark reads "M & S" for Markowitsch & Scheid.
Notes: Chain sold separately.
